Planning a trip abroad is a fun and exciting time, but as you research destinations and places to see, stay and visit, there is one important thing not to be forgotten – your transport.
Whether you are heading abroad for leisure or business purposes, you will need a reliable, trustworthy vehicle to ensure your trip goes without a hitch. Car hire is an easy way to avoid the complications of taking your own car abroad, but you will still have all the freedom associated with having a car of your own readily to hand. Many people feel nervous about hiring cars abroad, especially if you have never done so before, but once you are fully clued up about the process, you will soon see that there is nothing to worry about.
If you are looking to hire a car abroad, you have two options. Firstly, you can opt to travel to your destination then hire a car once you are there. This enables you to fly out to exotic or far-flung destinations without the hassle of taking a car with you. However, you are restricted by the usual airline baggage guidelines when travelling, as well as possibly being unsure of the car you will end up with once you are out there.
Option two is to hire a car in the UK which you can then drive abroad. Ideal for travelling to nearby countries as well as for European road trips, this is also the perfect option for those who don’t feel comfortable with hiring a vehicle abroad or getting to grips with the driver sitting on the opposite side of the car. Vehicle hire is also perfect for those who are moving abroad, as you can load a van with all of your possessions before driving to your new home.
Here at Global Self Drive, we do allow our vehicles to go abroad, as long as you make sure to notify us when booking. You should also note that full international breakdown cover and an insurance Green Card will be added to the existing car hire charge.
If you are unfamiliar with driving abroad, we recommend hiring a vehicle similar to your own (where possible) to help you feel more comfortable. Similarly, it may seem obvious, but remember that in many European countries (with the exception of Ireland, Malta, and Cyprus) you will need to drive on the opposite side of the road to the UK!
