When you have been driving one particular car for a long while, it can be quite disconcerting when you suddenly change over and begin driving a different car. Whether you are a new driver or have been on the road for years, getting to grips with a new car can still be a struggle. The same can also be true if you are driving a rental car from a car hire company.

Without taking the proper time to prepare, people can experience issues when it comes to safely managing an unfamiliar car out on the roads. This is only made worse if you have hired a car for the purpose of undertaking a long journey, as unfamiliar roads coupled with an unfamiliar vehicle have the potential to become very hazardous.

Car Hire Driving Safety

For that reason, we have put together some handy safety tips for driving unfamiliar cars to help you complete your journey safely and without encountering any issues. So, if you are planning to rent a car from a car hire company such as Global, make sure that you read up on our top tips first before you get out there and start on your journey.

  • Leave plenty of room for braking. You aren’t familiar with the speed or quality of this specific car’s brakes, so err on the side of caution and leave plenty of braking distance between you and the car in front.
  • Check oil and windscreen washer levels and tyre pressure before setting out on a long journey. The rental company should have done this before hiring the car out to you, but it is always better to be on the safe side.
  • If you have a particularly long journey planned, take the car for a test drive first. This will enable you to get to grips with the foibles of the car and, if necessary, allow you to adjust your driving style accordingly.
  • Avoid distractions while driving. This is important when driving any car, but even more so when driving an unfamiliar car. Make sure you get to grips with heating controls and music players before beginning your drive, as these can also be a distraction and take your attention away from the road.
  • Make sure you familiarise yourself with the car’s fuel capacity and mileage. If you’re heading on a long drive, the last thing you want is to end up getting stranded by the side of the road!

Great Service! Great Guys! I have rented from other companies in the past and had mixed experiences with them. I have shown up for a rental and they didn’t have a vehicle for me. I have been overcharged. You name it! I rent vehicles all the time for my band. These guys were prompt and courteous.

This is the 3rd time I've hired from Global and I love the experience. The staff are wonderful and go above and beyond to be helpful. The 1st time we only had 2 of us in the car. The 2nd time there was four and this time 5. We might need a bus next time, lol. I've hired from 2 different companies in Cambridge before and they were a total pain to deal with. You guys make the whole experience easy and I am very grateful, thanks!

A couple of weeks ago I had to rent a 17-passenger van for the film crew that I work with. I was served by your Ipswich office to get the reservation completed at very short notice (the day before pickup). They were really helpful and friendly and ensured that the process went smoothly. I’m really happy to have found you guys as we plan on working in your area a lot over the next two years, and will definitely be renting vans again! Best wishes!
